CALMER CLASSROOM SWITCHES

Classroom Transition Activities for PreK–3rd

Use a short movement cue to get students from one part of the day to the next without losing the room.

A good transition gives students a path

1. CUE

Name the skill and the next place.

2. MOVE

Use one small, repeatable movement.

3. ARRIVE

End with a clear sit, line, or freeze cue.

You are not adding another lesson. You are using the walk, line, or stand-up moment to review something students already know.

6 transition activities

Choose one cue for one predictable spot in the day. Students move and arrive where you need them.

1. Line up by sound

Call a sound. Students whose names or cards match it join the line.

2. Carpet clap

Clap the beats in a familiar word while walking to the carpet; the last clap means sit.

3. Count the steps

Count or skip-count while walking, freeze on a chosen number, then finish the trip.

4. Doorway word

Read one target letter, word, or number before walking through the doorway.

5. Chair check

Stand until the target word or number is read, then sit.

6. Reach and sit

Reach high, touch toes, and sit when a transition has gone a little long.

A clear classroom transition gives students a visual path from one activity to the next.

Two cues are enough

Start with one cue for carpet or seats and one for the line. Repetition makes the transition faster and calmer.

Want it ready-made?

Fluency & Fitness+ gives teachers short, no-prep activities that fit between lessons: review a familiar letter, sound, word, or math fact, move, and start the next block.

TINY FIXES FOR TRICKY MOMENTS

If This Happens… Try This

The line gets loud

Try: Whisper the target sound or word and make the movement smaller.

The carpet walk drags

Try: Clap the beats in one familiar word while students walk and sit.

The cue takes too long

Try: Reuse one familiar cue and finish with a clear sit, line, or freeze.

Keep it simple: under two minutes • two dependable cues • no video required
