SIGHT WORDS + MOVEMENT

Sight Word Practice That Gets Kids Moving

Pair a high-frequency word with one short move so PreK–3rd graders can read, reset, and return to learning in just a few minutes.

READ • MOVE • RESET

  • Show the word
  • Read it aloud
  • Do one clear move

What is moving sight-word practice?

Students read a familiar, high-frequency word and then give their bodies a quick job. The word is the work; the movement is the reset.

Small set

Choose 3–5 words students almost know.

Short round

Keep the activity to 1–3 minutes.

Clear reset

End every round with “sit.”

Five words they almost know will beat twenty words they shout and forget.

6 sight-word moves to try today

Write the words large, read the prompt, let students move, then reset.

1. Word stand

Students stand when they hear the target word and stay seated for a different word.

2. Hop the word

Show a word. Students hop twice and read it, or whisper it with you and hop once.

3. Air write

Students write the word in the air, say each letter, and then read the whole word.

4. Word walk

Place 4–6 cards around the room. Call a word; students walk to it and read it.

5. Spell and stomp

Stomp once per letter while spelling, then jump once and read the whole word.

6. Reach and sit

Reach high, touch toes, and sit. Use it as the predictable closer.

No screen needed: teachers and families can lead these with cards and their voices.

Quick Sight Word Questions

These answers are about using sight words with movement—not about the Fluency & Fitness+ membership.

Which words should I use?

Choose words students see often and almost know automatically. PreK may begin with names and classroom signs.

How long should we practice?

One to three minutes is enough for a quick word review and movement reset.

How many words at a time?

Start with three to five. Add a new word when the current set feels easy and confident.

Do I need a video?

No. Word cards and your voice work well. A video can help the whole class follow the same pace.

At home: A grown-up can show the word, have the child read it and move, and then reset.
