PHONICS + MOVEMENT
Phonics with Movement
Help PreK–3rd graders see a letter, say its sound, and connect it to a simple body movement—in one to three minutes.

What does phonics with movement mean?
Phonics with movement pairs a letter or sound with a simple “body job.” In the teacher-led ideas below, students look, say, and move at the same time using just your voice or word cards.
1. See it
Eyes on the letter or word.
2. Say it
Voice on the sound.
3. Move
Body on one clear move.
Keep it simple: one sound, one move, then sit and return to learning.
Why pair movement with sounds?
Young learners often remember what they do. A clear movement gives them another way to recall a letter or sound later. Use it to review—not to introduce a brand-new rule while students are moving.
PreK–K: letters + first sounds
1st: CVC, blends + digraphs
2nd–3rd: vowel teams + longer words
6 phonics movement ideas to try today
Say the prompt, let students move, then use “sit” as the reset.
1. Body letter
Call a capital letter students can make with their bodies. Try T, Y, or X. Say the letter and sound, hold for three, then sit.
2. Sound stomp
Say a sound and then a word. Students stomp twice if the word begins with that sound; otherwise, they freeze.
3. Tap the sounds
Say a short word such as cat, ship, or rain. Students tap shoulder, waist, and knees for each sound, then blend the word.
4. Stretch or shrink
Stretch tall for a long vowel sound and shrink small for a short vowel sound. Say the word, then the sound.
5. Blend slide
Hold two sounds apart in the air. Students slide their hands together as they blend them into one word.
6. Reach and sit
Reach high, touch toes, then sit. Use this predictable closer to transition into table work.
